Grand Canyon Maswik Dining Hall

A bustling wooden building on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, Maswik lodge conceals a cafeteria with size on par with a university and quality worthy of at least half of a Michelin star. The quality present in a variety of styles is impressive, but an emphasis on pizza and open air environment set this diner apart.

Atmosphere:

Nice chandeliers with metal “cages”. The style was very angular throughout the place, edges were prominent in the roof and walls. There were clear borders of wood between sections of the building, like the entrance to the main hall and the entrance to the pizza bar. Nothing fancy, just straight pieces of wood. Not sure I liked the continuous wood tiling style. Kind of monotonous for the eyes. Also easily flammable. Because it was as food hall, the restaurant was huge, with large windows on the edges of the building looking out at the beautiful road and trees right before the edge of the Grand Canyon. Basically, thanks for the effort, but unless there’s a secret second floor, I couldn’t appreciate much. Dining utensils were minimalist, and I don’t mean aesthetically pleasing. Take general silverware and plastic plates and cups and you can make your own Maswik Hall dining set. Functionality over all, I guess.

Actual Food:

I got the pizza from the Pizza Bar, my lunchmates got baked chicken. I think I won in terms of deliciousness, but my pizza had pineapple so some might disagree. They are heretics and wrong, Gordon Ramsey included. Anyway. My pizza had a nice layer of cheese, not overflowing with sauce. My pineapple was sparse but packed a punch, and the ham was thin-cut slices. Some worse pizza places use cubes of ham, to which I say if you won’t serve me a cube of pepperoni DON’T SERVE ME HAM CUBES. Thin cut slices of ham spread the flavor, allowing me to grab a scarce pineapple piece without having to take in a whole piece of ham at once. Their pepperoni pizza was similarly based, and just tasted good. It stood out to me among the hundreds of pizzas I’ve eaten. I also stole my friend’s wing to have a larger selection of data (he didn’t believe me, can you imagine?). The wing was nicely fried, with a thin crust and frying taste without saturating my hands with oil. Juicy chicken that probably would have been evolutionarily selected if the ruthless chicken farming market didn’t exist. The root beer from the fountain felt more concentrated, which allowed me to clear my palette and appreciate soda more, instead of sipping syrup water absent-mindedly

Rating:

Superior food combined with lackluster silverware and bland decor made Maswik an absolutely ideal place to eat for the blind. 6.5/10 ham cubes.
